Honor New Mexico volunteers during Appreciation Week

SANTA FE – During April 21-25, the state recognizes and celebrates the dedicated volunteers who selflessly give their time, energy and compassion to support older adults and adults with disabilities across the state.

From delivering meals and providing companionship, to advocating for the rights of residents in long-term care, volunteers are the heart of many state programs. In the last fiscal year, more than 1,979 volunteers contributed over 630,000 hours of service through programs such as the Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Senior Companion Program, and the Foster Grandparents Program.

“Volunteers are essential to our mission of ensuring the dignity, independence and safety of New Mexico’s aging and disabled populations,” said Sec. Emily Kaltenbach, Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD). “Their generosity, advocacy, and kindness are powerful forces that strengthen our communities every day. This week and every week, we are grateful to all of our volunteers who provide, joy, care and support into the lives of our elders.”
